What are the differences between Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X?

Fresh Video Game News 2022

We already know that Microsoft has answered almost all the questions related to the imminent appearance of the Xbox Series X and Series X consoles, which will appear on November 10, 2020, at the prices of €499 and €299, respectively.

However, the differences between the two consoles were not exactly clear, with Microsoft only revealing the detailed specifications for the Xbox Series X. Here, this inconvenience was also addressed: the company presented a detailed comparison between the Series X and the Xbox Series S.

Compromises in almost all chapters

The processor with which the Series S will be equipped remains the same AMD based on the Zen 2 architecture, with 8 cores, but with slightly lower frequencies compared to the Series X model: only 3.6GHz (when SMT is not used) or 3.4GHz ( when SMT is used).

The biggest difference between the two consoles is at the level of the graphics chip: the 52 processing units of the Series X (capable of a cumulative power of 12 TFLOPs) are replaced by only 20 units, clocked at a reduced frequency of only 1.565 GHz , capable of a processing power of 4TFLOPs. Microsoft insists that this video chip would be enough to achieve 1440p (2560×1440) and 60 frames per second.

Another downgrade is that of the RAM memory included in the Xbox Series S: only 10GB, compared to the 16GB in the Series X. Moreover, this memory will also have a lower frequency: 8GB with a bandwidth of 224GB/s and 2GB with bandwidth of only 56GB/s.

In terms of storage, both consoles will come with SSDs, but the Series S will benefit from a halved capacity: only 512GB. However, each console’s storage will be expandable with Seagate’s proprietary 1TB SSDs for Microsoft.

Last but not least, the Xbox Series S will not include the 4K Blu-ray Ultra HD optical drive found in the Series X model.

The new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles will be released on November 10, 2020, at the prices of €499 and €299, respectively. Pre-orders to be available starting September 22, 2020.
